WHY GET OUR WISDOM TEETH REMOVED?
It’s common knowledge that most people get their wisdom teeth removed at some point in their life. We’ve always been warned about wisdom teeth and how they’re not always bearers of good news. But the main question remains. Why? Why do we go through literal surgery to get our wisdom teeth removed? What harm can they do to our health? Well, let’s find out.
First and foremost, wisdom teeth are usually impacted. Impacted teeth are teeth stuck under the jawbone or gums. This, on its own, can cause severe pain and discomfort for the person.
Second, your mouth might be too small for an extra set of molars, aka your wisdom teeth. Your wisdom teeth might also erupt in rather awkward angles, putting pressure on your other teeth and therefore causing misalignment. Lastly, since wisdom teeth are so far back in the mouth, it can be challenging to access them with a toothbrush. This makes them vulnerable to cavities and gum disease, which is another reason why your dentist might suggest you get your wisdom teeth pulled.

WISDOM TEETH REMOVAL; HOW IT'S DONE
There are three main stages to getting your wisdom teeth extraction: before you get them removed, during the extraction, and after the procedure is over.
Before you get your wisdom teeth removal, you’ll meet with your dentist for an oral exam. In this appointment, your dentist will look at x-rays of your mouth to ensure your teeth and gums are completely healthy. This session is also a good time for you to discuss matters such as the anesthetic you get, the medication you consume, and the general state of your physical health with your dentist. Generally, you are either numb or asleep during a wisdom teeth removal. On top of that, if you’re particularly anxious about the procedure, you may inhale laughing gas or nitrous oxide to help you ease your nerves.
The second step, which includes the main procedure, is a 30-minute to one-hour dental visit with your dentist or an oral surgeon where you get your wisdom teeth pulled. Since you’ll receive anesthetics, you will feel no pain or discomfort during this step. To reach your wisdom teeth, your dentist might need to penetrate bones or gums. However, they will stitch the cuts afterward to help speed up the healing process.

After you get your wisdom teeth extracted, you may or may not immediately go back to your daily routines. If you are only numbed during the procedure and are alert afterward, you may drive yourself home or even go back to work or school. However, if you are going to be under general anesthesia while getting your wisdom teeth removed, you should have someone to drive you back home and take care of your children or pets while you gain consciousness back. The healing process should take no longer than 3 days. However, if you’re experiencing any pain or discomfort after 24 hours, it’s best to contact us as soon as possible!
That was a summary of wisdom teeth extraction. If you have more questions, or if you need to book an appointment now, all you have to do is give us a call at Mint Leaf Dental and we’ll take care of the rest for you!
