Need Markham Kids Dentistry?
Primary – baby – teeth are very important to be preserved and cared for. It is crucial to regularly check them in a dental office to make sure they are cavity free and if required restore their cavities to save the space for eruption of adult teeth and to prevent future complications and allow your children to have self confidence and function. It is important to care for your child’s oral health even before the development of teeth. After each feeding, gently wipe the infant’s gums with a damp cloth or gauze. This will help to remove plaque. Your baby’s first visit to a dental office will allow your dentist to monitor and evaluate the development of the facial bone and teeth and to identify hidden signs of possible decay.

First teeth erupt between six and twelve months of age. At this time, you should gently begin brushing them with an appropriate sized soft bristled brush and a small amount of children’s toothpaste

These are some helpful tips to develop good oral hygiene habits for children which will continue into their adulthood:
- Make brushing fun. Show you child videos or tv shows of their favorite characters brushing.
- Brush together. Brushing isn’t just for kids, if your child sees you brushing he/she will try to copy.
- Get your child involved. Allow them to come with you to pick out their toothpaste or toothbrush.
- Encourage fruits and vegetables as snacks rather than sweets. Change your child’s toothbrush at least 3 to 4 times a year. Don’t forget to floss.
- Putting your baby to bed with a bottle containing milk or other sweet liquids is highly discouraged. This will cause cavities. If a bottle at bedtime is a must, fill it with water (preferably distilled).
- Thumb sucking and pacifiers may cause abnormalities in the tooth and palatal structure which will later require orthodontic treatment.
- Use sealants on permanent molars to dramatically reduce the occurrence of cavities.
